Read what others are saying about Heart Root:

"Susan McCoy's memoir paints pictues of key events and relationships with her mother, her sisters and her husband that immediately engaged me as a reader. She tapped deeply into my heart as I followed her journey to discover and explore her playfulness, purpose and power. In reading about her journey, I was moved to reflect on my own."

"I am so impressed! What a wonderful job you have done. It took me a day to read it and today I spent time re-reading parts. Although you told me a lot of what you were writing about, I was so involved in the book. I laughed and cried in the same paragraph. Thanks for letting me in on the journey."

Not only did Susan do a great presentation, but she has also written a
wonderful book. I expected it to be good. After all, Susan put not
just a lot of time, money, and work into its publishing; she put
herself into it as well.  I don't think I have enough adjectives to
describe it. It isn't just good. It's funny, sad, thought provoking,
enlightening, brave, courageous...
I'm so proud of you, Susan.
Everybody:  Read the book, Heart Root.

I SO enjoyed reading your book.  I read in the mornings for about a half hour; it's my quiet, very enjoyable time of the day, and one day when I was about a quarter of the into the book, something shifted in your book for me and I kept reading.  Your story kept me reading, and you made me very late that morning! : )  I can see why you had to write that book for yourself, and I see that you really must share it with others.

Heart Root is a memoir about Susan's journey through grief to recreate a life filled with possibility and purpose.   I laughed and cried reading her book, often within the same paragraph.  Heart Root is intense and written in an honest voice that opened my heart to reflect on life.

Karen gave me a copy of your book.  I read 1/2 of it the first day I sat down with it.  I did not want to put it down.
I think you did a great job telling your story.  I thought the weaving of "head-songs" was a clever idea; expressing such a common thing that we all do, and original in the telling of it.

I really liked the way you told about Rick's stroke, how it was for you, and how it was for him.  I liked how you weaved it throughout the book.  (maybe I was especially intrigued by this part because of my brother's stroke last year.) The hospital mistakes were something I had witnessed with my dad and my daughter at 12 months old, (whom we never left);  as you spoke of these things I felt I was right there with you. (I was disappointed to learn that hospitals  have not been improved upon these things since 1983)

After reading chapter 14, I was in tears.....for you....for Rick...for the ordeal, and that is when I decided to go to the back and read Chapter 3.  It was a great and I chose the perfect time to go and read it.

What her students say:

Susan McCoy has been and continues to be my most inspirational provider.  What she delivers is not dogma but vision of what can be!  In the Spring of 2014,  my desire to begin writing about my life was literally born.  She midwifed me, forced me ever gently to write, told me a blank sheet of paper required filling, and commanded me to sit down pen in hand.

As she promised, the muse side of my brain that had been dormant sprang to life and the words flowed faster than I could record them.  Never mind, she said, just continue to record the images.  Forget chronological order and step by step history.  Write!  Write!  Write!
Inspired I remain!

I took Susan's class on a whim.  I had no writing experience.  I can't begin to tell you how much her class has brought joy to my life.  She has a way of bringing out the creativity in a person.  She has given me encouragement to continue to write and I thank her for that.
